PRESENTATION

The Superior Design and Art School of Vic is located in a city where art and culture are a tradition and a contemporary reference and where university studies and artistic education are an old tradition. It is placed around a XVIII century cloister and it has gained importance as a center of artistic education and design, with important roots in the place and open to the country.

The College aims to connect the different studies and levels through the interdisciplinary subjects, with a pedagogical approach based on the individual, in the creativity and the perception of the surroundings, without forgetting the craft and primary techniques and the current technologies.

ORGANISATION

The Superior Design and Art School of Vic, a College run by the Educational Department of our Government, is set at 70 km. to the north of Barcelona. Our Curricular project has developed through the time and, at present, it includes four different levels of education:

  • 2 A level Certificates in Arts: Visual Arts, Image & Design and Stage Arts, Music and Dance
  • 4 Technical Degrees in Arts and Design: Desktop publishing, Pottery, Artistic forging and Artistic casting & electroplating.
  • 5 Superior Technical Degrees in Arts and Design: Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Graphic design and Interior design
  • 1 Design High Degree (specialization in Graphic Design) which has been fully organised in ECTS credits since course 2010-2011.

The Centre is run by a Management team (Headmaster, Head of Studies, Educational Coordinator, Administrator and Secretary), a Pedagogical Board, a School Council (formed by teachers, students, non-teaching staff and a representative of the Town Council), the Teaching staff, an Association of Students and an Association of Former Teachers & Students.

The administration of the ECHE (Erasmus Charter for Higher Education) falls mainly on the Coordinator of Mobility Programs, who works in collaboration with the Coordinator of the Students’ placement Program, the pupils’ Tutors/Counsellors and with the direct support from the Headmaster of the Centre and the Pedagogical Board.

By means of the ESDAP (Superior School of Visual Arts & Design) Directing Board, we also count on the support of the Erasmus Commission and the Regional Partnership for mobility abroad of the Government of Catalonia.

METHODOLOGY

Compared to other Superior Design & Art schools as well as Fine Arts Universities, The EASD de Vic (The Superior Design and Art school of Vic) is a rather small centre and our experience with the ECHE is limited to three Academic courses. Although up to this moment we have not had any incoming Erasmus student in our school, we have had some experience in outgoing mobility programs and are fully organised and ready to receive incoming Erasmus students as well as send outgoing ones.

The Design High Degree has been fully organised in ECTS since September 2010 and The LOE Technical and Superior Technical Degrees are also structured in ECTS (semester or year-long credits). Therefore, in both cases, the equivalence is straight forward.
Regarding LOGSE Technical and Superior Technical Degrees, the recognition is always by number of hours not by credits.

It is clear to us that holding the ECHE is a prime tool to get definitely related to Europe as the reference educational-formative place to arrange students’ placement, to have incoming and outgoing Erasmus students, to share and exchange teaching-learning experiences as well as an efficient educational facility for self projection to publicize our own educational project.

LANGUAGE

Despite the amount of content that must be fit into the curriculum of our studies, we are fully aware of the importance of learning of English. Following this policy, some years ago, when the Department of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia offered the possibility to have a course of English for our students, in our centre, given by teachers of the EOI (Official Language School) we rapidly joined the program. Besides this course in our centre, both, our students and teachers have some reserved vacancies at the same EOI institution to attend official courses there.

With the same intention, two years ago our school established an agreement with the UVic (University of Vic) for our students to study languages in the Language School there. As a result of this agreement, our students can enrol with considerable discounts on fees.

Regarding language learning, in our city, there is the UVIC (University of Vic) which is used to hosting Erasmus Students and provides special courses to learn, improve and refresh languages. As we have explained above, two years ago our school established an agreement with this institution for our students to study languages in the Language School there. As a result of this agreement, our students can enroll with considerable discounts on fees.

The city of Vic, also has a EOI (Language Official School) which offers official language courses in several languages including Spanish and Catalan courses for foreigners at different levels.

Our school does not offer courses in English or any other foreign language. We distinguish ourselves by having a pedagogical approach which is based on the interdisciplinary connections between art, crafts and design by means of the creative process and a methodology based on the concept of significant learning. This creative-based methodology minimizes language barriers. Being a small centre our teaching staff is used to providing highly personalised monitoring service. Throughout the years, we have had students (non-Catalan speakers) from different countries, France, Denmark, Portugal, Argentine and even Japan enrolled and following full courses in our school.
Moreover, The School Management and the Coordinator of the Mobility Programs are in charge of giving support to incoming students and teachers who wish to carry out mobility in our centre and take care of them individually to solve any hazards which may appear.

RECOGNITION OF CREDITS

As our studies are organized in ECTS, the recognition of credits is automatic and students’ placement abroad is also a recognized activity. However, our centre carries out a previous bilateral agreement where the qualifications are validated and, the Europass is used in the case of teachers.

Outgoing students have an interview with their course tutor to get some counselling about the subjects taught in the destination centre and decide their interests. Then, once the Coordinator of Mobility Programs gives his approval, a learning agreement is signed with the destination school. When the mobility program ends, our school accepts the qualifications given by the destination centre.

As far as incoming students, our school issues a report certifying the credits that have been taken (30 credits per semester and 60 credits for a year-long course). In the last meeting with ESDAP, it was agreed to grant 3 credits of language for a semester and 6 credits if it is a year-long course.

As stated above, our students’ placement programs are also a recognized activity. The centre issues a report with the evaluation made by the company together with the school at the end of the training period.
